When her father switches political sides, a young filmmaker gets out her camera and begins to observe her family. The former mayor of Düsseldorf and current member of the European parliament has spent his career in the SPD whose party of leftist liberals once shaped the country’s postwar prosperity by balancing close ties with the United States for military protection and Russia for affordable energy. Now the world has changed. In search of politics that still makes sense to him, he joins a new populist party, which promises to revive that lost balance between East and West. For his 93-year-old father, a lifelong social democrat, it is an act of betrayal. For longtime companions, a dangerous slide toward the fringes. And the filmmaker has to ask herself – where do we belong when political grounds shift?
